“Even if you’re not a legal eagle, you may at some point in your life have encountered the term “moral turpitude” when signing a contract. Employers will sometimes stick that phrase into the section dealing with termination for cause, for understandable reasons. The idea is that if you do something morally egregious, something that offends the sensibilities of the organization or brings it into public disrepute, you can be canned summarily. Your boss is under no obligation to keep an embarrassing degenerate on the payroll.
A moral turpitude clause would have come in handy for Harvey Weinstein considering that, if his accusers are to be believed, he’s been harassing, intimidating, groping, extorting, and raping women for, oh, 20-25 years now. And yet, according to TMZ, no such clause was to be found in his contract with the Weinstein Company. On the contrary, Big Harv had an unusual twist on the traditional moral turpitude provision in his agreement. If he was accused of “misconduct” and ended up settling with his accuser, he had to reimburse the company for any legal expenses it incurred in the process — and then he had to pay them a fine. Of up to a million dollars.

According to the contract, if Weinstein “treated someone improperly in violation of the company’s Code of Conduct,” he must reimburse TWC for settlements or judgments. Additionally, “You [Weinstein] will pay the company liquidated damages of $250,000 for the first such instance, $500,000 for the second such instance, $750,000 for the third such instance, and $1,000,000 for each additional instance.”
The contract says as long as Weinstein pays, it constitutes a “cure” for the misconduct and no further action can be taken. Translation — Weinstein could be sued over and over and as long as he wrote a check, he keeps his job.”
…The more we embrace vulgarity and the breaking of taboos as liberating, the more predators will flourish. In their wake, more well-intentioned people will do violence to their friends and colleagues, thinking that because their behavior was normal it was safe. …
… Fighting back against this kind of casual crudity is necessary—both because vulgarity does violence to our understanding of ourselves as sexual beings, and what our sexuality is intended for, and because it blurs the lines around assault. We should not allow predators to hide behind the notion that we all use sexuality to make each other uncomfortable some of the time.
Supervisors, who have less to fear, should be particularly attentive to friendly-but-foul talk that makes their office a haven for harassers. Standing up to vulgarity is an act of stewardship, a chance to beat the bounds of your community, praying for all those who have been entrusted to you.

“We will not continue down a path whose predictable conclusion is more violence more terror and the very real threat of Iran’s nuclear breakout,” Trump said.
While Trump did not pull the United States out of the agreement, aimed at preventing Iran from developing a nuclear bomb, he gave the U.S. Congress 60 days to decide whether to reimpose economic sanctions on Tehran that were lifted under the pact.
That increases tension with Iran as well as putting Washington at odds with other signatories of the accord such as Britain, France, Germany, Russia, China and the European Union.
If Congress reimposes the sanctions, the United States would in effect be in violation of the terms of the nuclear deal and it would likely fall apart. If lawmakers do nothing, the deal remains in place.”

From our church, that we know of for the moment, an elder, an adult Bible study leader (one of my husband’s closest friends), a fifth grade teacher and an advocate for children and families, all lost their homes.
Poignant is right, Tychichus. We see these aerial photos and our hearts sink–because we recognize so very much. Life as we have known it for 16 years, is over. We have ministry opportunities for the rest of our lives.
Indeed, black humor gets you through. My colleague’s five year old said, “This has been an unusual day.” Her mother tried not to laugh when she continued, “I got evaporated!”

Those people, whose story I shared, lived up the street from our friends who were burned out. Honestly, it came so fast in the middle of the night people fled at a moment’s notice and some got trapped. 😦
I live 8 blocks from a fire station and our bedroom window–open–faces that direction. I never heard a siren of a fire truck leaving–that’s why I couldn’t believe my eyes when I looked outside and saw the red glow behind the hills. (See photo from that article Donna did). I live off the only road up there–why wasn’t I hearding sirens screaming up the road? Why didn’t I get a reverse 911 call on my phone?
Why couldn’t I find any information on the radio or the computer??????
That’s been the most frustrating thing–where was the information? It was FB and Twitter that made us act–friends, including the one mentioned above, saying they were burned out and fleeing for their lives on FB. That’s outrageous.
It turns out there were only 5 fire response teams in Santa Rosa that night–in a town of 165K. The rest were responding to a fire in Napa county. The fire chief came over to attend a meeting that night and drove over Fountaingrove. He noted the fire to the northeast but it didn’t look threatening. Winds were howling at 80 mph. An hour later, he drove back over the same route to Napa and saw the flames licking up the hillside. He couldn’t believe the fire had traveled so quickly and knew, then, we were in trouble.
STILL, no announcement. They knew the fire was burning at 10 pm. Our friends fled for their lives at midnight. Craziness and it will be bad when it’s finally sorted out.
My EMT daughter said she only turns on the sirens if it is desperate. I get that, you don’t want to alarm people, but if ever it was a night to be alarmed it was October 8/9.
AJ, I saw them and you were right. Hannity’s 10:35 Tweet was the funniest. Two outright lies and then a statement that displays his complete ignorance of the American form of government.
Hannity’s combination of ignorance and aggressiveness (which can also be found in Trump) was present in most of the characters in the movie, Idiocracy. This was something that made the movie seem completely over the top and ridiculous until last year.
Liberals Weinstein and Clinton are sexual predators. Trumpkins O’Reilly, Ailes and Trump are/were sexual predators. Too many liberals aren’t working and paying income taxes. Too many Trumpkins aren’t working and paying income taxes. Pea-brained liberals shout down conservatives like Shapiro and Murray on campuses. Pea-brained Trumpkins shout down liberals on campuses.
West Texas conservatives just think alike. At 7:23 I noted Trump’s odd combination of ignorance and aggressiveness.
Thirty minutes later I am reading Williamson expand on that thought by concluding that the hallmarks of Trump’s style are ignorance, pettiness, stupidity and malice.
Michelle, I wondered that too. Heard you were having fire troubles but could find very little in the news. Lots of “important” stuff being covered, but nothing on the fires displacing and threatening thousands of people.
That child who was evaporated reminded me of the neighbor girl who showed up with her mom at my daughter’s door. Her mom asked if my daughter was ok and the girl blurted out that it was the first tornado she had been in. My daughter had no idea there HAD been a tornado, but observed it was her first tornado too, apparently.
