  7. Happy Labor Day, all.

    I think the photo makes Art look like he has a really full beard. He has a beard, but it is close to his face. Maybe the glare off his gray beard made it look really full? And the ladies all know the camera adds ten pounds to people. 😉

    We had a great meal at Tripp’ s compliments of Chas. If I remember correctly, Chas had fried flounder and shrimp, Elvera had chicken cordon bleu, Jo had a salad and a small steak, Art had grilled salmon with brocolli and rice, and I had a grilled chicken Caesar salad. We had generous portions and Elvera had enough to take some home for later. Thanks, again, Chas, for the wonderful meal.

  9. Art and I had enough Marriott reward points to get two rooms without charge at the Greensboro Marriott that sits between the runways at the airport. It was a five minute shuttle for Jo to and from the airport so that was ideal.

    When Art and I got to Greensboro we were in heavy fog and thought that Jo’s plane might not be able to land. At that point I thought it really would be a tremendous surprise for Chas if Art and I showed up in Jo’s absence. But God managed to let her plane arrive so our plan worked out. Tricky, tricky Jo!

  11. Well, I did wonder if you were trying to cover up a beer, but then I realized it was a phone.

    That is what I meant, a picture of a tiny corner of the love we will have in Heaven. People of all sorts will be there with all manner of life experience and looking to God and reflecting His Glory.

  14. Chas, thanks for answering that question, whatever you were reaching for — a gun? your money-stuffed wallet? — looked mighty suspicious.

    What a fun surprise.

    There’s actually a cool breeze coming in the open windows this morning, that’s the first one of those I’ve felt in days. So that means our stifling heat may be breaking.

    Ricky, that fire is closer to me than it is to Bob, it’s through the hills beyond Hollywood – Burbank. I could see some of the smoke (but no flames) from it as I traveled up to Hollywood late yesterday. And it’s affected the air quality for many miles around. Last I heard (which was last night), it had burned 7,000 acres and was 30% contained; hoping the rains helped firefighters through the night, it sounded like they were finally getting a handle on it.

    Woman on FB — who lives just a few houses from me — reported encountering a coyote in her fenced backyard the night before last. When she tried to scare it off, it just growled & snarled at her (!).

    Even our dogs will have to become indoor-only cats at this rate.

    Our old home is a long way from Burbank. Down on the flatlands off I-5. It is 12 miles south of the LA civic center and 17 miles north of Disneyland. About 17 miles from Pasadena and 18 miles from Long Beach. My home town Downey is right in the middle of nowhere. 90,000 population and nothing special. I liked it there but I have moved on. I go down often enough but really only miss the people. Oh, and Pepe’s Mexican food. Our Mexican up here is lame.

    The hospital in our town is atrocious. Shopping? Walmart and Home Depot. BUT, no traffic! I suppose I should spend a little time and post pictures. It IS pretty here.

  18. 11:48, Sadly, probably true (and I’m not sure I wouldn’t have done the same at that point). Maybe we could throw pennies at them.

    I think the window for hazing was missed by about 15 years, the coyote generations now have learned (and passed on to their pups) that no harm will befall them. Although another neighbor said a coyote had been “waiting” for her and her dogs to come out of the house for 4 nights running so she talked to one of her other neighbors who shot it for her.

    More than 1,000 firefighters were getting the upper hand on a massive brush fire burning in the Sun Valley, Sunland-Tujunga and Burbank areas Sunday that is considered to be the largest blaze in the history of the city of Los Angeles.

    The La Tuna fire was 30 percent contained Sunday evening and had burned an estimated 7,003 acres, Los Angeles Fire Department officials said.

    All evacuation orders were lifted as of 6 p.m. In addition, the busy 210 Freeway, which had been closed in both directions between the 2 Freeway and Sunland Boulevard, had reopened, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said via Twitter.

    Gov. Jerry Brown issued a proclamation declaring a state of emergency in Los Angeles County on Sunday morning. Garcetti issued a local state of emergency Saturday and called on the governor to follow suit. The proclamation makes additional resources more readily available to combat the fire and its aftermath. …

  20. If a coyote was in a fenced backyard and a person tried to scare it, realistically it likely felt cornered, and growling and snarling is how most animals react in that situation. (Even the possum, which will fake death if its growls are not heeded.) Growls can be defensive and not just offensive.

  22. That would be my concern, Cheryl (12:18). You’re actually not supposed to try to haze a coyote that is cornered or that appears ill (a rabid coyote attacked a woman a week or two ago on the east coast somewhere). You’re also not supposed to haze a coyote with a dog present.

    Lots of nuances to all of this that we as average city-side citizens really aren’t well-versed on (I only know what I know by pursuing the extra information that’s out there and interviewing researchers).

    The mantra from the coyote advocates is that killing will only make the coyote population spike as nature fills its void. It seems that there is some data supporting that kind of population rebound effect, but I still think there is a benefit to keeping predators at bay, even if it’s a relatively short-term fix — in lieu of any other good solution (and I don’t think there is one out there), I think eventually the powers that be will arrive at that point in time. But there needs to be the political will (motivated by support from the general public) before that will happen.

  23. Nancyjill, I’ve been told that killing a coyote on your own property if you feel that you or your pets are threatened is within legal bounds. In this case, it sounds like it was done on the down-low and probably not widely known.

    The woman (who I think also has posted that she carries a BB gun) was happy that on the 5th night she was able to leave her house to walk her dogs without being stalked by a coyote.

    Then we have the young, dreamy-eyed woman in town who will always post about how wonderful it is to have this beautiful, coyote wildlife right in our own backyards. Those are the types of folks who probably feed them, of course.

    I thought the idea was to shake the penny can and thus frighten the coyote away.

    So did the neighbor who shot the coyote actually kill it….and if so, is he now in jail?
    Why would you put a dead coyote in jail?

  25. Yes, the noise of pennies in a can is supposed to make them head for the hills. 🙂

    One man who was walking his dog and was being followed by a coyote threw rocks at it. Nothing scared it but when he finally landed a blow with one of the rocks, he scampered off. There are different levels of hazing and the higher levels actually case some kind of (non-lethal) pain, but even those are illegal in most cities.

  27. Ranchers kill coyote out here all the time. We do notice the ranchers have placed llamas amongst their livestock to protect them from pesky critters. Perhaps ya’ll should get a llama or two 🙂

  28. I tell my children, if a coyote starts to come too close while you are walking the dogs, let go of the leashes. The coyote will take after the dogs, and potentially kill them, but that gives child an opportunity to get home. Dogs are a kind of bait to coyotes.

  31. Nancyjill, the goat herder who was tending a 62-acre former navy housing property near me as it was getting ready to redevelop finally got a llama after his goats started getting attacked by coyotes.

    The guy who helped me clean out and organize my garage was walking his beloved Chihuahua one night (off leash) when two coyotes lured him around the corner (he kept barking and following them). Goodbye little dog. 😦 Owner said he had no idea there were coyotes around here.

    And a few minutes ago I was talking to the 20-something guys next door & told them a coyote was in a backyard the other night just up the street. They were fascinated, said they also had “no idea” there were coyotes around here and they seemed entranced. We’re a tad naive here in the city … I told them they attack your pets and you definitely do not want them on or near your property.

    Most people don’t even think of hazing when they see one, they’re more enthralled (while fairly visible around here and no longer afraid of people, coyotes here are still rather furtive so they move quickly in and out of the shadows, people more often just catch a fleeting glimpse of them).

  33. We live in a Bambi-and-Thumper culture, I’m afraid. No one wants anything to be killed, ever (and I’d include myself in that ‘perfect world’ vision). But sometimes there are just no good non-lethal options.

  34. I am having a serious nosebleed. My nurse friend, Karen, has advised which is helpful. I never had anything like this. If it continues for long I may go to DR. Roscuro, what would you do?

  37. Did you try ice? Son had a serious one on our Nile cruise and the guy put an ice pack on his nose. It stopped but there was a lot of blood before the ice arrived.

  39. So here’s the QOD: How many of “us” have you met? Maybe have a three-part number: us/family members/pets.

    I would have 4/ at least 4/ 5 (in other words, I have met four people from the blog, plus two family members of one blogger–KBells–and I don’t really remember how many I met from EYG, but I at least met her husband and a sister, but it was a family group and I don’t remember the rest; and I have also met Donna’s dogs and Kim’s pets). For the middle one, though, I don’t know how you’d count Mumsee’s animals . . .

  40. I got it stopped for the second time. I have ice pack on my nose area. I have clothing soaking in cold water. I was thankful that Karen told me to expect the large blood clots which are yucky, but thank God for them. I told Karen I now have compassion for hemophilia patients. Among all her sufferings she has had plenty of nosebleeds. Despite being a liberal she has good reason to be compassionate. Thanks, Mumsee and Roscuro. You know your business, too.

  42. I had greater plans for today, like doing housework, but instead all I have gotten done is to learn how to stop a nosebleed. And how to clean up after a nosebleed. We could have stayed in Greensboro a day longer.

    Thanks for all the blog family pride and bragging on our picture. It was a last minute thought to get the photo in the restaurant where one of their staff could take a picture of all of us right before we left.

    I almost met Kizzie and her husband when we were in Connecticut, but it didn’t work out. And if I had known we were near AJ we would have dropped by.

    When I told my brother that we were leaving Miss Bosley at home while on the Greensboro trip, and he”d have to get her if anything happened to us, I knew it would give him extra inventive to pray for us to have a great trip.

    Mumsee, her hubby (he might count for three since he did occasionally post on World), and nine of their eleven younger children (the last two hadn’t joined them yet). I didn’t count all the animals, but there were a goodly number of goats, turkeys, rabbits, and other farm dwelling animals when I was there, as well as three dogs and two cats (outdoors of course).
    Aji suun, her teammates, who became my teammates for a little while, and her friends in the village.

  54. QoD: Easy, 0/0/0. Next spring maybe I can make it 1/0/0 or even 1/0/3 when my niece gets married in SoCal. (I know of only one blogger here in the LA area. Are there more?)

    My wife has a long history in Boston so we could be passing through New England one of these days.

    Maybe we could have a big meetup at Ricky’s or Peter in 2024 in connection with the total solar eclipse. We could do it here, too, but April 8 is not at a great time of year for good eclipse-viewing weather.

Well, I’ve tried to meet up with several more, including plans to meet Chas this summer (but then we decided to move out of town, and it no longer made sense to ask our church to pay for my husband to attend the denominational meeting); I might have met Michelle except she and I were both traveling at the same time. I talked about going to see Mumsee for a few weeks in the summer of 2011, but then a handsome man started wooing me . . .

    I’m on my 4th load of laundry, lots to do today; and I still love these new machines 🙂 I am still awed that the dryer dries things in just a single cycle.

  65. I may be in Los Angeles in February and will definitely be in Pasadena next August. We will all be celebrating our birthdays at G’s house, Although B’s birthday is in November, mine in January, R’s in July, but the Baby of our group won’t celebrate his until August. Since he now has the nicest house and he IS the baby we are allowing him to host us all. 😉

  80. Classes start this week, so I will be going back to the city for the semester. This evening, I was playing the piano for my parents, digging out all their favourites I could find, as they washed and dried the dishes. My mother told me afterward that my father said to her as they were listening, “I’m glad we got music lessons for them.” Both my parents did with out extras in order to pay for those lessons for us, but they are satisfied with the return on their investment 🙂

  87. Depends on the day, Kevin – April showers bring May flowers… Spring doesn’t really get started until May. But there is a possibility that the day will be fine. April 8th is close to the beginning of the month, and sometimes March goes out like a lion and sometimes like a lamb. We’ll have to check the Farmer’s Almanac closer to the date.

  91. “Little” Bruce is the terror of the dog park, a mix but I see mostly cattle dog. He’s a maniac and consistently gets into trouble. Real Estate Guy says he’s the Kim Jong Un of the park, crazy, no common sense and uncontrollable. (There’s also a “Big” Bruce, often called “Bruce Squared,” also at the park.)

  92. I couldn’t tell for sure, but it looks like my new home will be in the path of totality. Nashville was this time, but of course I’m not in Nashville anymore. Had I been still, I would have bought eclipse glasses and all of that. As it was, we simply sat inside and watched the light get dim. But it would be interesting to get to see it, and I hope that next time I can.
