  1. Miss Bosley does love the Bible because it means quiet time with me. Sometimes I do read aloud or sing which she does not mind, thankfully.

This Bible has passages in the Old Testament that relate to Jesus in blue lettering. I enjoy reading the NLT which is especially nice for reading aloud. I like a variety of versions. This morning I was reading in an ESV, Psalm 37, and its related devotion in a Woman’s Devotional Bible.

It doesn’t help to write notes to yourself if you can’t find your notes when you need them

  3. I have my plumber’s hat on today. Thanks to a This Old House video I think I know what to do to get the tub drain stopper lever to work again so the tub will drain. I found an old can of WD40 and prided myself that I found it so easily. Then I spent about 40 minutes trying to get the sprayer to work. It never did. Art brought a can home for me. Yay for husband’s who know how to stop by a store on the way home from work. Now hopefully I can get the screws to let lose. I prayed over this thinking that once I knew from the video what to do that it would go smoothly. God wants us to learn patience in the process He provided. Meanwhile Art has been enjoying attention from the in home hair salon shampoo girl. Miss Bosley wants to help, too.

  4. Thanks for Your advice, Chas. I need to find my prep notes now from last month for the program that got cancelled due to bad weather. I have to prepare for tomorrow and do not want to start from scratch, again. Now I am taking off the plumber’s hat and scratching my head (I need a shampoo).

  5. Good Morning Everyone. Mumsee isn’t going to like this but oh well…
I think I have told you before that I think I have bursitis in my left hip. I take a supplement from the health food store that helps it, but the biggest help is that My Little Snuggle Pup has for some reason decided he has to be touching me when he sleeps. Dogs have a higher body temp than humans and if I position him just right he sleeps next to my hip and it doesn’t hurt.
Have I told you that Mr. P has been on a diet. I think he has lost about 30 pounds. He goes to the Wellness Center for about two hours every day. He hangs out with what we locally call the “Blue Hairs”. He swims and does water aerobics with them. He says in the water his body feels 18 out of the water not so much, but it really has helped him.
I, on the other hand, have gained weight because he doesn’t want me to cook. He is eating his “diet” food and not inclined to cook for just me, I am living off of canned vegetables. I have got to find some motivation to start exercising again, but I just don’t have two hours a day to devote to it. I would really like to find the motivation to start running again. It doesn’t require me to go anywhere and I can get it done first thing in the morning…except I don’t.

  6. Kim, I say this about myself, not about you (although it may apply): If I really want to do something, I WILL find the time for it.

  7. Miss Bosley!

I slept well last night, but have a long day ahead trying to speed up this garage project. Worker is coming (last I heard) at 8 a.m.

On the plus side, I woke up at 6 this morning to the wonderful, beautiful sight of … FOG. Our marine layer is moving back in which should cool things down a bit. Anything over 80 and I’m over it, especially when you’re working outside in it. And that sun … Too much.

Tomorrow also is Salvation Army pickup day so I need to gather up and box everything for that before I go to bed tonight. I have a few boxes already and a few bags.

  8. Exercise is good for the mood as well as the body. I try to exercise so I will be able to keep up the place. Kim needs to exercise to help her deal with things. Maybe then she won’t need a dog to keep her warm so her bursitis does not flare.

  9. I’m in the boat with ya Kim….I think about getting out there and running but then I don’t. I’m moving all the time, in the house, at work, but I need the cardio….once the ice melts from the roads perhaps I’ll think about getting out there and running three miles…that’s my limit 🙂
And it is so true what you say about the warmth of your precious Amos…my dear friend has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s…this has been a huge blow to the four of us who have been meeting together for the past 25 years or so. S came over to the house a month or so ago and Lulah went right over to her and pressed her warm body against S’s leg…the leg calmed and quit shaking. It was then S realized she could have a therapy dog to help her…and it would need to be a bigger dog than her’s to help her…one like Lulah…it was amazing to watch my girl hone in on my friend and help calm her….amazing creations of our Lord indeed.

  10. What are your thoughts on meditation?
Once BG and I went to a guided meditation class. I envisioned a cabin with rocking chairs on the front porch (A place from my childhood)with a field of flowers and a doe and fawn standing at the edge of the field.
BG envisioned a field and she was a fawn standing with her mother.
Weird and maybe a little scary?

  11. When I was in a water aerobics class at the YWCA we had at least one instructor who would use some guided type meditation as our wind down time so we would leave totally relaxed. It seemed effective at the time, but it was a bit New Age mumbo jumbo, and I would probably not appreciate it now at this point in my Christian walk.

One of the ladies in my group at the conference went to a session on Praise Moves. It is exercise that uses scripture repetition for doing stretching/yoga type exercises. Afterward a number of ladies came up to her and said how inspired they were with her ability since she has her oxygen tank. I think she out walks me. She was usually ten feet ahead, and my other friend was ten feet behind. Nothing like group bonding 💖

Well, I’m indoors sitting under the ceiling fan on a break. Unfortunately, our marine layer has burned away and it’s just the sun out there now. I’d love to live farther north …

Worker is cutting up the cardboard boxes as I empty them, and there are now more empties that filled. But there are still plenty of filled boxes. Even just putting contents into a Salvation Army or trash bag takes a bit of time and bending. I may start pulling things back into the patio, but that’s pretty crowded with the things I got done yesterday.

Hoping by the end of today we’ll be putting things neatly stacked and labeled back into the garage on shelves and in the cabinet.

Oh, found my mom’s mythical student lamp. This item was mentioned frequently by her and then by my aunt after she died (aunt wanted it but as far as I knew I’d never seen such a thing). It’s probably missing some pieces but it’s a gorgeous thing, brass shade and glass chimney (amazingly not broken!). Would love to also get that adapted to electrical use.

And I found our neighbor’s old New Testament which I knew was “somewhere.” And more family letters and books, including my grandmother’s funeral book from when I was 6 and we were still in Hollywood. She was buried in North Hollywood as my mom had been taking care of her in her last months. My grandfather, her husband, is buried in Iowa.

  13. The Container Store has archival boxes for delicate photos and antique books, old albums, etc. I bought a few but could use more. I’d feel better if I could get all of the really old things packed in those and then in one of the weather-tight containers (though that might counteract the acid-free environment from the archival boxes, I don’t know).

  14. Success! At least I was able to use the new fangled WD40 spray mechanism which probably won’t last about 30 years like the old can did. I got the lever apparatus off. Now I need to watch that video again to see if I need to buy an extraction tool if a part is still stuck inside the drain. Then I can put on the tub dentist hat! I am getting quite a collection of hats.

I need to work on the program for tomorrow but I also need to take a shower before the program, too.

  15. Going to Stone Mountain brought back a lot of young Wesley memories since we went there frequently when he was a child. We climbed the mountain numerous times, saw Santa and real midget elves there, rode the train around the mountain, rode the riverboat with His Kindergarten class, went fishing in the lake, went to the animal park, went ice skating once, had a Thanksgiving meal at the inn, went through museums, spent hours at a gigantic playground, went to light shows, and more. For one birthday we went with, I think it was Karen’s family and her MIL, and we carried blankets and a cooler. As it got dark, the lawn filled with people on blankets. I brought out Wesley’s birthday cake and lit the candles, and our little group sang happy birthday. Others nearby, who we did not know, also started singing. It was really special.

  16. Kevin, I have known of some who will not stop by a store on the way home from work. It is sad. It is a basic skill, yes, but the motivation to help in that way must exist more than motivation to meet other desires.

  18. Wow, this is hard work. Been at it now for almost 5 hours and it’s not even noon yet, and it keeps getting hotter out there. My box labels are getting sloppier and more generic as it goes. Pretty soon they’ll all just be labeled “STUFF’

Found a bunch of those specially bought collectors’ plates (bought for that purpose) that I don’t think bring a lot of money but there are probably 10-15 of them — Disney, Wizard of Oz, patriotic themes mostly, all in their collectors’ boxes with the certificates.

Worker is hauling off the trash bags, he’s also been cutting up and compressing all the cardboard to haul away. The give-away bags — numerous — will go out for the Salvation Army pickup on Wednesday.

But it looks like this job will run into another day, though I hope to get almost all these boxes emptied by the end of today. I was surprised by how many boxes of clothing I had been storing for Carol — since they no longer will fit her, she said to go ahead and toss or give away so I’ll take those to a Salvation Army drop off spot tomorrow; I set aside a few nice T-shirts I thought she’d still enjoy and *might* be able to fit into.

I also was holding a couple boxes of dishes, glasses for her, not sure yet what to do with all that but they’re set aside with the clothing bags in a separate area.

There was just a lot more there than it initially looked like, I guess. Mostly books and odds and ends type things left to do now, I think. I believe we’ve made it through the heirlooms, which is good as that was what slowed me down so much. What’s left is pretty easy, 90% is toss or give away. But it still requires a lot of bending and lifting, mostly out in that hot sun. I’ll be sore and sunburned after today, that’s for sure.

Not surprisingly, this all reminds me of moving.

But it will feel VERY good to have it all done and to have the garage neatly organized with things I intended to keep, not cluttered up with the random stuff that multiplies for no good reason through the years.

  19. I took some photos of the collector plates w/boxes & certificates, will try to research those online with the other more vintage items. Guess my mom bought the plates while they were popular in the 1970s-80s thinking they’d be worth substantially more in time. I have no idea how much those things get now, however, and I don’t think it’s all that much — but I have no sentimental attachment to them so might as well see if I can’t find eager buyer(s). But later. Until then, they’ll be safely packed in weather-tight bins and labeled for when I decide to deal with it.

  20. Guided meditation is an occult practice and one that should not be practiced by Christians. Meditation in the bible is always meditating on God’s word. Lots of this kind of stuff all over and in many different forms–even using biblical terms, but it is not biblical.

DJ, Some of the stuff you are finding sounds fascinating.

  21. Donna, your exercise in patience I’m going through it all reminds me of going through piles of homeschool books/curriculum/etc., to label and sell at the annual homeschool used curriculum fairs. It took several days of writing required info on each item’s card along with the seller number. The cards had to be a specific size or they would not take the items. That was a major factor in our homeschooling process each year. Unlike those with large families, we did not get to use the materials with younger children. We sold what we could and donated the rest. The proceeds helped fund the next year of used materials.

  23. My husband once, I think when he was a child, threw out a dill pickle, and a blue jay greedily grabbed it before any other bird could get it. It started to swallow it or eat from it, and suddenly the “sour” registered, and the bird dropped it and shook its head like it was trying to get rid of the horrid taste. My husband still loves and says he hopes the bird learned a lesson about greed. 🙂

  24. Donna, Have a garage sale with some of the stuff you no longer want or need. Do not price anything. Just tell people to make you an offer. Sometimes they will offer more than you think it is worth and sometimes you will have to wiggle fingers a little to show them they need to up their offer.
Depending, we can get about $500-$600 for the kitchen upgrade and I keep going back and looking at the Spode Camille…not like I need any more dishes or anything.

  26. Kim, are you ever tempted to say some random, over the top, thing, just to see how he will shoot it down? I am afraid he would make it much too easy to a muse myself at his expense.

  27. I am not clever enough to do that. I really wish I were.
I did once plan a trip to Richmond to catch up with my best friends from high school. We had discussed flights and everything when he pops up and tells me that he is going on vacation out of the country that week and will just forward the phone to me.
I did tell him I hadn’t seen these people in a long time and we had plans to act like we were in high school again only this time with alcohol and did he really want me talking to his clients.
I ignored every call, text, and email that came to my phone.

  28. Kim, send him a request for a week early, and when he says that won’t work, then come up with the other date. Seriously, I think we all wish you’d take the first bus out of there. He doesn’t deserve you.

  29. Kim, he is a rotten boss. So many bosses are verging on rotten when they are given the power of paycheck over people.

Can you get a recording of the class to do on your own time and just consider it another update to your resume? I know since in the short run it benefits him that it seems logical he could give you time for training. But take the long view that this is part of your personal upgrade plan to get away from him.

Video tutorials make my eyes glaze over.
I made it all the way through college and graduate school listening in class and taking notes. Most of my text books were never cracked unless they were a work book or I had to look something up.

And I have Salvation Army bags to get out front tonight.

The Spode and other dishy wonders — including my mom’s very delicate little doll’s tea set, made in Japan probably circa 1920s or earlier, in mint condition — are all photographed & packed in see-through, weather-tight bins with labels and he’s stacking them on an overhead shelf (not too high, I can get them using a step stool).

I do have some crazy random things that would be good for a garage sale but I’m not sure I have the energy do it.

  35. Kim, I took a course on how to use Excel the first semester of my college program, and got excellent marks in the course. Do you think I can remember how to use it now? I cannot, and I now I need to use Excel for some of the statistics. YouTube is my best friend at this point. The course also taught how to use Word, which I use all the time, and Power Point, which I find intuitive; but Excel deals with things mathematical, and my brain does not work in mathematical terms.

  36. Elvera used to have a hobby of collecting salt and pepper shakers. Wherever we would go, she would buy a pair for her collection. She kept them on a bookcase her father made.
When we left Annandale for Hendersonville, she had a yard sale. She sold the entire collection to a guy for $25.00. I’m sure he left smiling.

  39. Donna’s “ordeal” reminds me that someday we’ll have to go through MIL’s things. She has a lot of collectible bells, walls covered by shelves full of books she bought at library book sales, and piles of old magazines. She claims to have read every book, and keeps the magazines for some recipes. We have told her over and over again to just cut out the recipes and get rid of the magazines. besides, she rarely cooks anything from a magazine recipe, and had an overloaded shelf of cookbooks ion the kitchen. I guess in a few years we’ll load it all into one of the farm trucks and take it ll to the recycling center.

  40. They’re actually reachable without a step ladder but I can always ask a neighbor for help. I also packed lightly so no one box (well, maybe except for the Spode, but what could go wrong, really?) is heavy.

Worker is finishing up, he figures just a partial day tomorrow and we’ll be done. Salvation Army comes hopefully early so a bunch of stuff will go with them, more than I’d planned. Still have Carol’s clothes and dishes to deal with, if SA doesn’t take them tomorrow I’ll just drop them off at one of their clothing bins in town.
