  1. Ricky mentioned whole Episcopal churches leaving the denomination in the 1990’s. It caused a lot of law suits as well. Churches lost their buildings and contents when that happened. Turns out the Diocese owned everything.
I left the Episcopal church myself. I joined the Anglican Church in North America. A group of clergy put themselves under the Bishops of South Africa. Your personal testimony and your relationship with Christ matters. We have grown to the point that we now have our own Bishops and Diocese. I am in the Gulf-Atlantic Diocese.

  2. The street violence between leftists and nationalists reminds me of the Weimar Republic. Has anyone read a good book on that subject?

  3. Re Eastern Orthodoxy: This post has a link to a PDF that explains just why it is not a good thing to “jump ship.” It is written from a Reformed perspective, so those of you who are not Reformed might not agree with all of it, but that shouldn’t keep it from being useful. I have not read the appendix on Roman Catholicism (yet), but I read the rest, and I learned a lot.

  4. Trump’s first 100 days…..

    Better than you might think.

    http://nypost.com/2017/04/15/trumps-first-100-days-have-been-better-than-you-think/

“As the end of Donald Trump’s first 100 days in office approaches, now’s a good a time to cut through the fog of misinformation, disinformation, media propaganda, ideological bias and outright hostility that has greeted his arrival in Washington and take a clear-eyed look at how he’s really doing.

Answer: much better than you think.”

  5. So now we know that the Obama admin used Hillary’s Op Research as the grounds for his FISA warrants on Trump associates. The discredited “report” is what they took to the judge, and he went along with it. This FISA judge should be replaced if he’s allowing unverified nonsense to be submitted as evidence.

    http://finance.yahoo.com/news/fbi-used-bombshell-trump-russia-231708079.html

“The FBI used information from the explosive, unverified dossier detailing President Donald Trump’s alleged ties to Russia to obtain a warrant to secretly monitor former Trump adviser Carter Page.

That same dossier — a collection of memos compiled by former British intelligence agent Christopher Steele — has been used in other elements of the US investigation into whether there was any inappropriate contact between Trump campaign associates and Russia.

CNN first reported the FBI’s use of the dossier to secure the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrant on Page, the former Trump foreign-policy adviser who has appeared to be at the center of the Trump-Russia investigations — due in part to his previous work in Russia and his communications with Russian officials.

President Donald Trump has previously called the dossier “phony stuff” and “fake news.”
    ———

“Page has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing and said suggestions of his alleged involvement in any perceived collusion between the Trump camp and Russia were “lies.”

Page said in a statement to Business Insider on Tuesday: “I look forward to the Privacy Act of 1974 lawsuit that I plan to file in response to the civil rights violations by Obama Administration appointees last year.”

“The discovery process will be of great value to the United States, as our nation hears testimony from them under oath and we receive disclosure of the documents which show what exactly was done in 2016.””
    ——————-

I look forward to it as well.

  6. Ricky,

    http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2017/04/sources-fox-news-has-decided-bill-oreilly-has-to-go.html

“The Murdochs have decided Bill O’Reilly’s 21-year run at Fox News will come to an end. According to sources briefed on the discussions, network executives are preparing to announce O’Reilly’s departure before he returns from an Italian vacation on April 24. Now the big questions are how the exit will look and who will replace him.

Wednesday morning, according to sources, executives are holding emergency meetings to discuss how they can sever the relationship with the country’s highest-rated cable-news host without causing collateral damage to the network. The board of Fox News’ parent company, 21st Century Fox, is scheduled to meet on Thursday to discuss the matter.

Sources briefed on the discussions say O’Reilly’s exit negotiations are moving quickly. Right now, a key issue on the table is whether he would be allowed to say good-bye to his audience, perhaps the most loyal in all of cable (O’Reilly’s ratings have ticked up during the sexual-harassment allegations). Fox executives are leaning against allowing him to have a sign-off, sources say. The other main issue on the table is money. O’Reilly recently signed a new multiyear contract worth more than $20 million per year. When Roger Ailes left Fox News last summer, the Murdochs paid out $40 million, the remainder of his contract.”

  7. Part of the reason folks might think Trump is doing worse than he actually is rests with the media and their biased coverage.

    http://www.newsbusters.org/blogs/nb/rich-noyes/2017/04/18/honeymoon-hell-liberal-media-vs-president-trump

“As President Trump approaches the end of his first 100 days in office, he has received by far the most hostile press treatment of any incoming American president, with the broadcast networks punishing him with coverage that has been 89% negative. The networks largely ignored important national priorities such as jobs and the fight against ISIS, in favor of a news agenda that has been dominated by anti-Trump controversies and which closely matches what would be expected from an opposition party.

For example, President Trump’s push to invigorate the economy and bring back American jobs received a mere 18 minutes of coverage (less than one percent of all airtime devoted to the administration), while his moves to renegotiate various international trade deals resulted in less than 10 minutes of TV news airtime.

Eight years ago, in contrast, the broadcast networks rewarded new President Barack Obama with mainly positive spin, and spent hundreds of stories discussing the economic agenda of the incoming liberal administration.

For this study, MRC analysts reviewed all of ABC, CBS and NBC’s evening news coverage of Trump and his new administration from January 20 through April 9, including weekends. Coverage during those first 80 days was intense, as the networks churned out 869 stories about the new administration (737 full reports and 132 brief, anchor-read items), plus an additional 140 full reports focused on other topics but which also discussed the new administration.

Five big topics accounted for roughly two-fifths (43%) of the whopping 1,900 minutes of total network airtime devoted to the Trump administration. But those five topics accounted for a much larger share (63%) of the negative coverage hurled at the administration, as the networks covered each with an overwhelmingly hostile (more than 90% negative) slant.”

Ever since election night last November, millions in America and around the world have wondered what happened to Hillary Clinton, who was widely expected to become the first female president of the United States.

In fact, nearly everyone in the business of politics thought she would win, including many of Trump’s own people.

    So how did she lose?

Providing that answer is the mission accepted by Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes in Shattered: Inside Hillary Clinton’s Doomed Campaign. It is by no means the last word on 2016, but Allen and Parnes must be regarded as early front-runners in the race to make sense of it all.

They saw and heard far more than most of us, exploring deep inside “Clintonworld” in search of the real story. And in these pages, they share enough of what they witnessed to enable us to reach our own conclusions.

There is no Big Reveal, no shocking secret answer. Instead we get a slow-building case against the concept and execution of the Clinton campaign, with plenty of fault falling squarely on the candidate herself. …

  9. Because she was more despicable than the other despicable choice?
She knew the rules of the Electoral College and was too arrogant to pay attention to them?
The media told us she couldn’t lose so people stayed home and didn’t vote?

  11. From link above:

Bill O’Reilly has been forced out of his position as a prime-time host on Fox News, the company said on Wednesday, after the disclosure of multiple settlements involving sexual harassment allegations against him. His ouster brings an abrupt and embarrassing end to his two-decade reign as one of the most popular and influential commentators in television.

  13. More fake news….

    http://hotair.com/archives/2017/04/19/first-dreamer-deported-story-turned-fake-news/

“USA Today launched a provocative story late yesterday which immediately had the liberal side of the media up in arms. The blaring title read, “First protected DREAMer is deported under Trump.” The uproar was immediate and I even wound up getting into a brief Twitter debate with MSNBC’s Chris Hayes over it when we both assumed it was real. The deportation actually took place back in mid-February and the details were custom made for a 2018 political ad campaign. (Emphasis added)

Federal agents ignored President Trump’s pledge to protect from deportation undocumented immigrants brought to the United States as children by sending a young man back to his native Mexico, the first such documented case, a USA TODAY examination of the new administration’s immigration policies shows.

After spending an evening with his girlfriend in Calexico, Calif., on Feb. 17, Juan Manuel Montes, 23, who has lived in the U.S. since age 9, grabbed a bite and was waiting for a ride when a U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer approached and started asking questions.

Montes was twice granted deportation protections under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program created by President Barack Obama and left intact by President Trump.

Wow! What an awful guy that President Trump is, eh? Look how he’s going back on his word and harassing this poor, struggling young DREAMer who simply wanted to go out on a date with his girlfriend. But there’s one problem. As the Daily Caller News Foundation quickly discovered, USA Today got nearly every aspect of the story wrong.”

  14. I don’t think this will happen, but there is an opportunity for an Ailes/O’Reilly/Bannon startup news network. They could add a few of the more extreme and goofy radio talk show hosts. I am certain they would be able to pull viewers from Fox even as Trump pulled voters from Rubio, Walker, et al. I am not sure they would be able to attract major corporate sponsors.

  15. Expect lots of Republicans in Congress to follow the lead of Jason Chaffetz and retire.

They are in no-win situations. If they stay true to their conservative principles on issues like free trade and the infrastructure boondoggle, Trump and his cult will fight them. If they degrade themselves and become Trumpkins, they will have to constantly monitor Twitter and CNN in order to change their positions daily or hourly to stay aligned with Trump.

In any event the Democrats figure to take a bunch of their seats in 2018 and 2020.

  16. Fox staffers express relief, anger and uncertainty
Some wonder why it took so long to crack down on O’Reilly when complaints go back years.

    http://www.politico.com/story/2017/04/19/fox-news-bill-oreilly-237382
    _______________________________________

… Relief came from those who were tired of O’Reilly’s star presence and attitude. They described O’Reilly as someone who was not particularly liked among his colleagues compared with other hosts like Sean Hannity.

“There won’t be anyone shedding tears about his departure,” one insider said. …

…. Other staff members expressed concern about how O’Reilly will handle his departure. He’s the highest-rated host in the cable news business and a successful author with legions of fans loyal to him. Would he turn his ire on the network that built him into what he is? Would he take his talents elsewhere?

“He’s going to go after us,” said the insider, noting that O’Reilly doesn’t go down without a fight. “In this digital age, he can really destroy the company. Suppose he doesn’t keep quiet and says, ‘I’ve been railroaded by liberal media.’ ”

But history suggests the Fox News brand is bigger than one person. When Glenn Beck left Fox News in 2011, he chose to expand his personal brand, founding his own TV network and website, The Blaze. But it has never come close to eclipsing Fox News ratings or influence.

  17. Although people seem to like the Weimar analogy, it won’t be realistic until both the Democrats and the Republicans have their own militias in the street. Unfortunately, Weimar political-social history has been under treated by the English world — too busy looking at upcoming events.

I always thought Bannon, Trump, etc were planning to form their own network but an unexpected event in November derailed them for now. But Bannon is getting pushed out of the White House, O’Reilly is free, so maybe they don’t need Trump right now.

I found the Eastern Orthodox discussion interesting. I was raised Dutch Reformed but married a Polish Catholic. I found the rite, rote and ritual of Catholicism more in tune with what it means to be human and culturally relevant. Thousands of years of fine tuning probably did make it more in tune than dry Protestantism. Although some rituals had me shaking my head ( children bringing eggs and sausage to be blessed on Easter), they give people a sense of belonging. Now, I disagree with just about everything Catholic but if I was to attend church they have a head start on my soul just because of the rite rote and ritual.
