But non-churchgoing conservatives didn’t flock to Trump only because he articulated their despair. He also articulated their resentments. For decades, liberals have called the Christian right intolerant. When conservatives disengage from organized religion, however, they don’t become more tolerant. They become intolerant in different ways. Research shows that evangelicals who don’t regularly attend church are less hostile to gay people than those who do. But they’re more hostile to African Americans, Latinos, and Muslims. In 2008, the University of Iowa’s Benjamin Knoll noted that among Catholics, mainline Protestants, and born-again Protestants, the less you attended church, the more anti-immigration you were.

A higher percentage than both of the left’s “fair share” poster boys Bernie and Barry. Talk about a non-story, or “fake news,” if you prefer…..

A Heat Street review of public records show that a total of six current, prominent MSNBC pundits have recently settled federal or state tax liens, while one still has tax problems. Moreover, at least two other hosts who recently left the network have also had massive tax liens filed against them.
MSNBC declined to comment, and none of the current or former tax debtors responded to requests for interviews sent through an MSNBC spokesperson.”

Yep. Maddox is talking about Trump’s taxes. Hannity and O’Reilly are talking about a crime committed by an alien. No one wants to try to explain the economics of healthcare and the difficult choices we face to the American people. No one wants to educate the public about the actual economics of trade. If they tried to do so, most people would switch channels to watch the Kardashians.

Last night, we walked along the mob scene of Waikiki, and came upon a huge crowd of people gathered around a service entrance at the Cheesecake Factory. Cameras up and excited, they appeared to be waiting like paparazzi for someone. Many police cars spun their lights, waiting at the restaurant.
Rumor had it former President Obama was spotted dining inside.
CR knew he was on the islands for a spring vacation, so maybe?
All I can say is, I would not have gone to the Cheesecake Factory, but, of you’re entertaining teenage girls, maybe that was a good spot? 🙂

I’m not surprised the alt-right can be found in the secular right as opposed to the religious right. Christianity (and Islam and Buddhism) are universal religions not anchored to one particular culture. In some sense this is pure psychology, most people find church fills a social, cultural and/or spiritual need. When people cease to attend church (whether they identify as Christian or not) they tend to look elsewhere to fulfill the need, hence the New Age section in the bookstore. Serious members of the alt-right seek a more cultural exclusive religion than Christianity and hence will often dabble in Wican, pre-Christian European religions, etc. Right wing populism which focuses on culture and racial differences are more appealing to non-Christians than Christians (especially since most Christians are no longer white and/or western). A university friend who’s usually quite left wing occasionally strays over to the right side of the fence because as a German he found the cultural arguments persuasive. For a time, he was quite critical of Christianity for distorting German culture — then he got married.
The National Review. An good analysis on why your can’t apply European politics to the US and vice versa. Immigrant nations (like Canada and the US) can’t apply the same logic as the populist right in Europe.
I’m afraid Maddow was duped — Trump’s tax returns like Obama wiretaps is a squirrel designed to distract attention away from Russia and health care. It appears the tax form originates from the Trump side of the aisle. Given its missing schedules and other information, the form tells very little. Trump did write off $100 million in losses that year, though. And he paid 25% taxes on the rest because of a minimum tax rule — take away the minimum tax rule and he would have only paid 4% on his taxes. And I wonder which tax he wishes to repeal?????
Yesterday I mentioned a church group turned back at the border. Today I learned the Girl Guides are not even going to bother trying. They’ve cancelled all trips to the US including to national conventions and campouts. They cite the diversity of girls in the Guides as their reason. They are afraid one girl would be denied entry from a bus or van full of girls, and then she would be left at the border or the trip cancelled. To avoid uncertainty, they aren’t even going to try.
I think you can go very wrong with cheesecake. I’ve tried it enough times, including some very expensive ones, to know there is no such thing as “good” cheesecake. It’s all inedible. I usually pass on apple pie too, but if it’s all that’s available and I’m hungry enough for dessert I may eat a slice. But cheesecake isn’t worth trying, even if it’s chocolate pecan cheesecake or some other attempt to hide behind good food–I’ve tried several of them before concluding that.
I don’t care much for it because it is usually where tourist are likely to be and the portions are huge, so what do you do with what you can’t eat?
I have been known to get a go box and give it to the first homeless person I find.
Kim, You are right about the portions, but that is a problem now with all desserts at all restaurants. We generally only order dessert if there are four of us to split one.
DJ, basically a dessert usually has to have chocolate in it to be worthwhile. I’ll make exceptions for pumpkin pie, blueberry pie, and a few other things, but not for apple pie and definitely not for cheescake (even if chocolate is added). If it has cream cheese in it, it’s not a dessert, it’s dairy, and something that adds nothing to the end of a meal.
