Prayer Requests 2-16-17

It’s Thursday, so don’t forget to pray for Jo, her students, and the people of PNG.

Anyone else?

Psalm 139:1-14

You have searched me, Lord,
    and you know me.
You know when I sit and when I rise;
    you perceive my thoughts from afar.
You discern my going out and my lying down;
    you are familiar with all my ways.
Before a word is on my tongue
    you, Lord, know it completely.
You hem me in behind and before,
    and you lay your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
    too lofty for me to attain.

Where can I go from your Spirit?
    Where can I flee from your presence?
If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
    if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
    if I settle on the far side of the sea,
10 even there your hand will guide me,
    your right hand will hold me fast.
11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me
    and the light become night around me,”
12 even the darkness will not be dark to you;
    the night will shine like the day,
    for darkness is as light to you.

13 For you created my inmost being;
    you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
    your works are wonderful,
    I know that full well.

  1. Interview seemed to go well; it took him 3 hours to get to the appointment but that was because of a big accident on the freeway in front of the office. The interviewers could see the cars piled up when he called to explain why he would be tardy. No black marks, but his mother thinks he dodged one.

    It’s been raining hard here since about 2 this morning; every member of my family will be driving somewhere on a day that’s supposed to include miserable rain and flooding. We’ve been praying one thing: that the storm will dip south and miss Oroville Dam country. We’ll take one for the dam down here (three hours away).

  2. Please pray for our country. Each side seems intent on badgering the other and doing foolish things. I thought we were divided under Obama, but this is making that look like a walk in the park.
    It is especially difficult because my husband has CNN on constantly and when that isn’t on he watches Samantha Bee, Trevor Noah, and John Oliver. I cannot escape it. CNN is All Trump, All The Time. I have begun to despise the sound of Wolf Blitzer’s voice.

  3. I was awake in the deep of the night last night for a couple hours, and took the time to pray again for yesterday’s prayer requests and other situations. I can see insomnia as a blessing, in that it gives me more time to pray, and pray more thoroughly.

    But after I finished praying, I sunk into a woe is me attitude. I feel like it is spiritual warfare, that I can go from fervent prayers for serious situations others are facing to being all gloom and doom about my miniscule, mountainous problems, if you know what I mean.

    When morning comes, especially when the daylight is accompanied by sunshine, like today, things seem generally better. Not today, though. The weight of so many things is on my shoulders.

    My husband and I, on the way back from our tax appointment yesterday, talked about further employment. He has an idea about a home-based business in addition to his current full-time work. And I will likely need to get a job outside the home soon to supplement my piano teaching income.

    I do not know how we both will be able to have two jobs while continuing to home school. It appears unsustainable. I don’t want to give up homeschooling.

    I love teaching piano, but my only (paying) student (I teach my youngest daughter, too, but obviously I don’t earn a wage from that), who is very dedicated, will be going off to college in a year and a half. Will I have any more students by that time? It is so disillusioning sometimes to be doing what you love, and want to be doing more of, but the opportunities are not coming.

    I’m afraid the “mom teaching piano at home” image is a stereotypical one in many people’s minds, and a mother who teaches in her living room gives the appearance of one who shouldn’t be charging a rate that really is commensurate with her previous experience, education, professional development status, etc.

    Too many teachers, in my opinion, are greatly undercharging for their services, and that hurts us all in the profession. Is not the worker worthy of his wages? I don’t think charging $100 a month for 45-minute lessons 45 times a year is excessive for a teacher with three decades’ experience, a music degree and professional memberships.

    Sorry to dump.

    Please pray for us, and especially for my attitude. There are some things I can control, other things I can’t. Wisdom, patience, perseverance, freedom from sinful attitudes about other people; whatever you can think of to pray about that you believe I need help with. There’s a mountain of stuff, really.

    Thank you.

  4. Please pray for K. She had her biopsy this morning – they just wheeled her to recovery. Instead of the lungs or the abdominal mass they did the biopsy on her liver as it is the least invasive. This ugly thing is spreading every time she gets tested for something. I’m so sad. Please also pray for S who has been attending all the appointments with her and has a young family to take care of as well.

  5. I agree you have the right to ask for what you are worth, Six Arrows. OTOH, many parents are also strapped for fees for everything under the sun. Many children do not need the best teacher–only one to get them started. Similar to a beginner not needing the best instrument until he is able to notice or make use of the difference in one. Some also may prefer a shorter time for their child. That stinks because I know you have to prepare and make a commitment whether for a half hour or forty-five minutes. Only you can decide what is best for you and your family, of course.

    Prayers that you will keep remembering that things can get better. The devil so loves to discourage us.

  6. Heavy needs today. Kim, I didn’t think it could get any worse than it was when Bush was in office driving the left mad. 🙂 But yes, the rift between us in this nation seems to be only going deeper and deeper. Not sure where it will all end. 😦

    Carol is back in the hospital, she called me last night and was so depressed again — low potassium once more, along with a return of cellulitis in her legs, an old problem she’s had off and on. The facility poo-pooed her desire to go to the hospital last night, told her to wait until morning, so she called 911 on her own. She already sounds better this morning and they have her on the sodium IVs again (and in an isolated room due to her MRSA).

    Apparently there’s no way to control these potassium levels very effectively (the heavy-duty diuretics she has to be on for edema depletes her body of the potassium).

  7. Symptoms for low potassium can be confusing and thus hard to diagnose at first: mental confusion, slow/slurred speech, dizziness, fainting, low blood pressure, depression, “abnormal psychological behavior,” severe arm and leg cramping affecting movement, similar to paralysis in some cases … I remember thinking she’d had a stroke or something the first time it occurred more than a year ago.

  8. Michelle – Before getting this job (which she does love), Nightingale had made a great impression on the HR lady at the local nursing home. She was told they’d get back to her the following week, so not hearing from them in the days after was not a problem.

    The interview was on a Monday. The lady called her back on Tuesday, wanting to hire her. Unfortunately, her phone did not alert her to a voice message until Friday, after office hours.

    I thought she should call right away, even if it were only to leave a message to explain. She wanted to talk directly to the lady, so said she would call on Monday. She had read some tips about job interviews that said not to apologize for things (being late? not getting back to them on time? not sure) because those apologies sound like excuses. I insisted that explaining what happened would be best.

    When she did call on Monday, & had to leave a message, she only said that she was returning her call, no explanation. She told me she would explain when the lady called back. The lady never returned that call, nor a subsequent one, nor did she reply to Nightingale’s email.

    I was so disappointed, & annoyed that she didn’t take my advice, because that job would have been only 15 minutes from home, at a well-respected nursing home. Her job at Claire’s was a 45-minute commute, which meant babysitting an hour & a half more than she was actually working, so I was so hoping she would get a job closer to home.

    Well, it turned out okay after all, because shortly afterwards, she got this job, a little over 20 minutes away. During the whole thing, I kept reminding myself that God still had a plan.

  9. Kim – Could you tell (or have you told) Mr P how stressful you find having that stuff on all the time is to you? Maybe ask him to put a limit on the time he has it on &/or try watching something else? It’s your home, too. I couldn’t stand to have the TV on all day myself, no matter what was on.

  10. Okay, now for my own prayer request, & it’s really not that important, but I’d appreciate a little prayer. . .

    We recently bought a new dvd recorder to hook up to our TV. (Since Hubby goes to bed early, I record any shows we watch, even the ones I watch alone.) Well, technology has changed quite a bit since the last time we had to set up a new dvd recorder. Hubby started late yesterday afternoon, but couldn’t get it connected correctly. Today I was going to see if I could figure it out, but Little Guy is home sick from school, & I am babysitting him while his mommy is working, so I wouldn’t be able to concentrate on it.

    So please pray for clarity in our minds & understanding when we get back to it, that the instructions will “click” in us, & we’ll realize what we have to do. Thanks!

  11. Kim, since you work from home, it seems particularly relevant to be able to say something like “I need quiet, with no TV, between these hours to do my best work. It would also help you to keep a sane wife!”

  12. I too hardly slept last night (didn’t manage to get to sleep at all until about 6 a.m. and we had someone coming to the house at 9:30 or 10:00), and I spent a bit of time praying for several people from the blog.

  13. I didn’t sleep well last night either, but mine is complicated in that I have obligated myself to attend a Mardi Gras Ball tonight and will be out at least until midnight. I wonder if they serve coffee at these things????

  14. Gatorade might help, but she probably wouldn’t buy enough for the month (and the facility won’t do extra things like that). They do provide potassium supplements but that doesn’t seem to be preventing these almost monthly crashes.

    My sense is that she may need a stepped-up level of care in the near future if they can’t control the potassium. It makes no sense to keep going to the hospital over and over again. She may need to transfer to a place where some of that can be provided for her onsite.

  15. Do not give her gatorade! It is filled with salt and will counteract her diuretic. Suggest the magnesium supplement to make the potassium stick.

  16. Well, looks like Carol will be in the hospital for a while, they ran a bunch of tests today (which they always do) and a nurse told her that as of now, there’s no sure timeline on when she might get out of there. But she told me that at least she feels “safe” when she’s in the hospital, unlike when she’s in her residence and feels like the staff isn’t listening to her.

  17. On the plus side, she said her private room (at Hollywood Pres Hospital) appeared to have been freshly painted and has a TV with cable.

  18. Aren’t private rooms expensive? Or maybe your hospitals are different from the ones here in the east? Insurance will not pay for a private room, at least that’s the way it used to be.

  19. I think she does have outstanding medical bills but hospitals are obligated to treat, whether someone can afford it or not. She’s low enough on the “income” scale that she falls into that category.

    Visitors have to put on all kinds of protection to visit, including gloves, gowns, etc.

  20. With medical care, you’re fine if you have a lot of money or no money — it’s everyone in between that gets hit. 😦 Just learned that one of my meds (an eye drop, of all things) is going to cost me a whole lot of money now on our new work-provided insurance … But on the plus side it gets me very close to meeting my $1,300 annual deductible. And next year I’ll transfer over to the old people’s (Medicare) plan.
