Please continue to pray for my friend, Karen. Her condition is serious. They are trying new medicines to regulate her heartbeat. Her heart is quite damaged. I am thinking she might even be one to qualify for a full transplant (just IMHO).
Please pray for my friend C. She lives in another state, near no family but so she can be near her children. She has had one medical issue after another with a fistula. This morning at 3 she posted on FB asking for prayers because she had been in one hospital where they had her on IV antibiotics and another medicine. She has a blood clot but the new hospital has her on nothing. I am not sure what all is going on. I know she is a former addict and my radar tells me not to take everything at face value, but if she asked for prayers I am willing to give them to her and ask you to do the same.
I can’t remember if I shared this before, so excuse me if this is a “rerun”. . .
When Little Guy fell & hurt his elbow, Nightingale had taken him to a local “prompt care” clinic, where they x-rayed his elbow & determined it was broken. She was advised to go to a children’s hospital (CCMC) for the follow up a couple weeks later.
At CCMC, they did not see evidence that the bone was broken, but did find that a little bone in his elbow seems to be necrotic (cut off from blood flow), & thus not developing as it should. She now has to take him to a specialist.
For now, Little Guy is not allowed, by “doctor’s orders”, to participate in gym or play at recess. Can you imagine how hard it is for an active little boy to not be able to play at recess, the only thing that made school palatable for him?
In addition, Little Guy had gained a lot of weight the last month or so of the summer, outgrowing a lot of his new school clothes. I’ve wondered if that was due to the emotional upset of that incident with his dad.
So please pray for healing of his elbow, & for wisdom for all of us (Nightingale especially) to know how to help him cut down the extra eating without making too big a deal of it, which could lead to him wanting to over-eat even more. And most of all, please pray he (& his parents) will come to know Jesus soon.
Kim, Carol has a fistula that seems to cause problems from time to time, I’d never heard of such a thing before. (And I’m squeamish so I almost cringe when she starts talking about it.) Continued prayers for her now that she’s out of the latest rehab facility and is back “home.” Pray that she can become more regular at church and might cultivate more local friendships there, people who maybe can give her a hand (and some company) when needed.
Pray that the work needed on my house can get done sooner rather than later so I can put what feels like a lot of inner chaos behind me. Some of it can’t be rushed, waiting now for the bathroom window to come in which could take a few more weeks, so I feel “in limbo” with everything somewhat on hold right now. And it’s hard to make the house look better with the stacks of boxes and items that need to be kept close by and ready (and are too heavy to move anyway) when the bathroom work begins. Still, what a blessing to finally be getting these things done.
Prayer for daughter and granddaughter as they are struggling with nursing. Daughter’s milk has not come in and grand lost one pound which is more than they want so they are putting her on formula for a week waiting for the milk to start. Daughter is feeling like a failure in many ways but knows better and understands it is mostly hormonal. Grand is struggling with bili results and may need more measures as well. Thanks.
I don’t know. I do know that for some it comes later than others. Colostrum first and then milk. And I know they can give you meds to induce milk production. But my mom commented many years ago that she had not had enough milk and had been unable to nurse. I took that to mean she was in the day when they were pushing formula and if the milk was not right there, put baby on formula but it may have been more. She is long gone so can’t ask.
Can she get a lactation consultant in to reassure her and give her tricks? I don’t know if La Leche League folk are still around, but my understanding is some insurance will pay for a consultant–OR have her call her local WIC office; they’re trained there and it should be free. Or, even her local pregnancy counseling center, someone can probably help.
Two of my sisters-in-law had problems with nursing their firstborns, and both (I believe) waited “too long” to give up on the supply. I am NOT saying don’t work with it and try, because I think mother’s milk is far and away better than formula. But one had a really skinny son, and she said that everyone in my family is thin . . . but when I look at his photos from that time, he was desperately thin. Another gave up on trying when she realized her daughter had become “too weak to cry.” So yes, it is possible that no matter what a mother does, she cannot get enough milk.
The medical community is a little too quick to say “Switch to formula,” though, and I’d be inclined to try a lactation specialist. My sister had one medical person tell her she didn’t have enough milk and should give up, and she asked would it work to nurse more often, and they said it might, and within a couple of days her milk supply had been established–her body responded to the increased time suckling.
Also, my sister noted that the amount of weight they look for a baby to gain is set based on averages . . . and formula-fed babies tend to gain more initially. So after the first baby or two she took it with a bit of a grain of salt when they said what the baby “should” weigh. By two weeks or a month past birth, her babies had gained back all the weight they had lost, and more, and were a little ahead of the curve. But initially, no. (It has been years since any of this, but this is my memory of how it worked for her. At any rate, the medical people wanted her to give up, but they were basing some of their assumptions on unfair comparisons to bottle-fed babies, and her babies did well.)
Daughter had a couple of lactation specialists help her at the hospital. The doc thinks the milk will come by tomorrow so this is supposed to just be a supplement until then. She is supposed to nurse for a few minutes each time before the bottle is given and supposed to feed every two to three hours so it sounds like they are doing what they can to help her achieve nursing while keeping the baby on track.
BG had one bottle of formula because I left the house and he panicked. With grand daughter (Mr P”s) she was nursed and given mommy milk in a bottle when we kept her. She didn’t want the bottled and reached for me. I was filled with such longing I gave her to grandpa and told him I didn’t know nothin’ bout givin’ no babies no bottle. The were both happy
My suggestion is that someone else give grand a bottle instead of the mommy. Formula comes out of a bottle easier than milk comes out of a breast.
Beyond that from a former Nursing
Nazi some woman can and some can’t. Some babies do and some babies don’t. Aren’t we glad God gave the intelligence to us to develop formula for the times it doesn’t work out.
I told you that Chuck cried a lot as a newborn. After a couple of weeks my mother came out. She decided to give Chuck some “Similac” i think it was. He stopped crying. She just didn’t have enough milk. He drank formula until he was weaned. He just turned 58. It might have helped.
Please pray for two new friends of mine I recently got to know at this weekend’s music conference that I attended.
C, like me, has had six children. Her youngest took his life this past winter — he was a senior in high school. She and her husband and children are trying to rebuild their lives, and she says they all seem to have turned a corner recently, where the grief is not as raw. Still very hard, though. They are believers, and I know your prayers would mean a lot to C and her family.
Please also pray for M’s family. She has a daughter who was pregnant with twins. Water broke with one of the babies, and they couldn’t stop labor, so little A (M’s grandson) came into the world at 23 weeks gestation. He is 5 weeks old now and hanging on. Mom is still in the hospital — they are trying to keep her from prematurely delivering the second twin. She is very worn out with all of it and wants to go home. Dad used up as much leave time as he could, and has had to return to work. The couple also has a 10-month old. Please pray also for this family.

I don’t know. I do know that for some it comes later than others. Colostrum first and then milk. And I know they can give you meds to induce milk production. But my mom commented many years ago that she had not had enough milk and had been unable to nurse.
