  7. Good Morning! That appears to be a good load of firewood right there!! Brothers and husbands can be so handy now can they not?!
    It is a cool morning here…much to get done..thinned out my garden yesterday…mums are in full bloom…no vines growing on this house….although I would love to see if I can get a Virginia creeper started along an arbor…perhaps next year!

  8. There’s an adorable old house in my neighborhood, a small Spanish/craftsman place painting a very dark, deep shade of terra cotta with dark blue trim (it works on that house). The windows are arched and the front window shows the most beautiful little room, a study of some kind, very well kept and with traditional furnishings, with books and an amber-glow lamp (we walk by there on dog walks sometimes).

    The owners appear to have intentionally let it be vine covered, the front of the house now barely peeks out. As I said, it’s adorable — what is that term, vine-covered cottage? — but probably not all that good for the structure.

    So is your house brick, Janice? That’s always such a stately look and I suspect it’s not uncommon in the south?

    I had a long night’s sleep last night, drinking some coffee to try to wake up. It’s back to work for me but then I have all next week off. And I’m generally satisfied with the progress I made this weekend in the spare room. But I may have to add some of the Christmas overflow to the give-away pile, someone else could surely have more use for it than I do.

  13. I have noticed in various land fills, that guys are always willing to give a hand to someone. No matter where. It was true in Northern Virginia, Hendersonville and here. I was pulling a limb out of my truck that had most of the load on top of it. Another guy came and grabbed part of it and, just like that, it was done.
    I have done the same for others. Just give a hand where it helps.

  14. The continuing saga of fifteen year old son….today he neglected to take his books to school. He has been unable to stop himself from pilfering his sister’s belongings. Even took the picture hangers of the wall (Why does someone do that?) Anyway, in an effort to speak his language, I removed his backpack from his possession, but left the books. Apparently, he did not think it worth his time to take his books to school. I have told him to use his locker at school rather than bringing home all of the books but he chooses to carry them. Now he can carry them without a backpack.

    Yesterday, he went to work with his brother. His brother told him to bring a lunch. He opted not to, so brother fed him. (not helpful in trying to get the boy to think beyond the second, but understandable). When brother brought him home, he asked for something to eat. I have told him we eat at five thirty and if he opts to not be here for meals, I am not obligated to serve up something special for him. Especially as he does not inform us of any plans. Anyway, I offered to sell him a sandwich. He declined. I offered to give him a leftover untouched peanut butter sandwich. He declined. I did not feel like I needed to offer him any more. I laid out his breakfast for him this morning, he did not touch it. I suspect his brother gave him plenty to eat yesterday. And so it continues.

  15. That photo was taken after the massive mess had been removed. It was to show that prayers for safety and A.C. unit to be okay were answered in the positive. My brother had piled those smaller limbs on top of the A.C. unit to help shield it from the bigger limbs that he was sawing on.

  16. We have a lovely color of peach brick mixed withupper painted wood for the split level upstairs portion.. We have a really big slope on the back yard so this is the split level among the ranch houses surrounding us. The back yard would be fine for a pool with a deep end 😁

  18. DJ I went back and looked at the sink you posted. I REALLY like it. A little storage underneath but clean lines. Being able to hang a towel from the sink could free up some wall space. Having a hook by the shower/tub would be a nice place to hang your bath towel. That is how it is in my master bath– a hook on each side of the glass wall of the shower. In looking at other photos on Houzz, etc over the weekend, the white medicine cabinet you like shows up in quite a lot of them. I like it too. I also like your plan for the white subway tile. I would take it up the wall just a little higher than half way but not all the way to 3/4. Do give some consideration to the soaker tub I mentioned before. So many of the older (1950-1980’s) tubs are so shallow that if you did need to take a good soak you couldn’t. I am not a real estate agent in California but here it would add to your resale value–that is if you have to replace the tub. Although if you are tiling around the tub you may want to go ahead.
    Depending on your favorite colors I would paint the walls above the tile white with a slight tint. I once had a bedroom that was painted white but was tinted blue–it went with everything! Going with greens and yellows on the outside of the house you may want to lean that way with the tinting.     Thanks Kim & Linda. As much as I love the console sink idea (and not all of them have the exposed pipes) — I also especially like the towel rail! — I may wander back to a pedestal style for a smaller footprint. Someone also suggested that the console sinks would maybe be more characteristic of the ’30s or ’40s, but I believe I read where they were used in the 1920s.

    A plain wall sink is another option but that’s pretty plain looking … More looking to do. And thanks for that link, Kim, another place to explore.

    And I’ve also come to think 3/4 up with subway tiles (with a rolled black tile border at the top). Cornflower blue (or something pale and similar) above.

    As for the tubs, I read something that suggested the soakers are great if you have 2 full bathrooms and can also have a standard size tub in the other one. This article said if you’re a shower person (which I am, I rarely take baths and they’re always pretty short when I do), a deep soaker might soon be regretted — it’s also a challenge for parents with small children, apparently. So not sure it’s a big plus in resale value necessarily, it probably all depends on who’s buying. Obviously a lot more could be done to this house, including adding a 2nd full bath, but I’m not going to be able to do that. Maybe the next owners, … But they better not tear out my beloved 1920s bathroom.

    If the original cast iron tub is underneath the liner — and can be restored — that would probably qualify as a ‘deep soaker’ to some degree, I think. But who knows.

    Janice, I saw the mention of the movie and actually tried to find it somewhere last night but never could. Not on Netflix, which was kind of surprising. I’ve never seen it though, so thanks for the tip.

  24. Those wall and console sinks also can be disguised with “skirts” on the bottom, but it’s a look I don’t think is all that great, it’s a little too frilly for my tastes. I had a wall sink with exposed pipes in the 1920s apartment I rented (with the huge bathroom that had a giant clawfoot tub and built in dresser!). My mom thought I should put a skirt around that sink to hide the pipes, but I left it as it was. Only lived there for 4 years, though. Cutest apartment ever. 🙂

  29. If you put up a shower curtain think of making it longer and hanging it higher. This can be done simply by buying a regular shower curtain and putting a coordinating deep trim at the bottom. I have seen that done in a lot of upscale condo bathrooms and I even made one back when I lived another life that I made from directions in Southern Living–back when it was still a good magazine and not all advertisements. You could even do this by buying a fabric you love, using fabric glue or stitch witch and having someone put grommets in it. I put pleater tape in mine that I made and did pleater pins so that it looked like a custom drape had been used as the shower curtain.

  32. I currently use one of those extender rods for my shower curtains, but I suppose putting in a permanent one would be easy (and I use separate rods for liner and cloth curtain to separate the two)

    My property managers got some really bad reviews on yelp. and they upped the rent quite a bit without even mentioning it to me. They upped it last year too. How to deal with this or just ignore it and hope it goes away.
    I found the ad on craigs list, that’s how I know

  38. Or you could make the bathroom decision like we did: We are getting five new children in two weeks, run to Home Depot and buy whatever they have that will fit into those four rooms and we will call it good.

  39. We don’ have Rants & Raves today, But a rave anyhow if I may.

    At FBC Hendersonville, we attended the 8:30 service. As you all know, people usually pick a place to sit and that is their place forever. We usually sat in the middle and there was a couple that sat beside us on the end. .
    The only thing I knew about the couple is what I learned from talking to the lady who sat beside me. She was a beautiful woman. She told me her age once, (in her early seventies) and I couldn’t believe she wasn’t middle forties. But her husband was retired navy.
    That aside, they sent a card telling us how they missed us.
    That was a thoughtful thing to do. And I don’t know how they got our address. Probably from the church, though I don’t know how the church got our address since we haven’t corresponded with them since we moved.

    Such a nice thing and I thought I would mention it.

  40. Jo, don’t believe what you see on Craigs List. Especially about anything real estate related. So many scams go on I wouldn’t trust it. You may contact your rental management company and let them know what you saw. They may have done it but probably not. They really can’t without your permission.

  48. The last header photo shows what seemed like a miracle to me. The fallen parts of the tree were being held in place by a broken off cherry tree and a broken off red bud tree so that the jagged edge of the sweet gum tree was on the window but did not break it. This all happened as I was writing at the computer about prayer and how great God is.

  50. This has been an absolutely superb week for butterflies. (I could add dragonflies from last week’s nature hike.) Today I counted eight different species in my backyard, and I had a different species (one I’d never seen before) two days ago, and the nature walk adds at least three more I didn’t see today (including monarch and viceroy . . . I don’t see the orange ones in my backyard often, though the presence of milkweed now brings the monarch a few times over the summer). A dozen species in one week can’t be any sort of record for experts, but it’s a pretty good week for someone who just enjoys seeing them.

    One species we saw on the nature walk, the common buckeye, is a really lovely little species I’d only seen twice before, once in my backyard. This week I have seen it in my backyard twice, including three of them today! And a very small but gorgeous pearl crescent was present in large numbers today; I got three in a single photo several times (within three or four inches of each other) and probably saw 15 or 20 of them in all.

    I probably should send AJ a few of my favorites . . .
