    Becca goes back to school next Wednesday…fifth grade….
    We are headed to Bandera to visit with my sister and her family this Thursday through Sunday. I’m really looking forward to seeing all of them.

  3. Donna mentioned yesterday about some guys falling off cliffs. In western NC, the problem is people, usually guys, who go out over waterfalls. It is slippery out there. It happens a couple of times every year. Warning signs are up. It still happens.

    Time for some sleep here after a long Bible study/prayer time.
    A very frustrating day, but ended with an answer to prayer. I was told there was no room for me on a flight in January, no room for another six days. That is expensive to find somewhere to stay. I saw that there was still a seat on the plane, just lots of luggage weight. They kindly moved cargo around to make room for me. So thankful.

  7. I couldn’t understand a lot of what he said, but FoxNews usually quotes newspapers only when commenting on the issue. Usually with a panel of experts (usually lawyers) in the field.

  11. He is fine, but one of the eighteen year olds dumped his car over a mountainside a couple of days ago. He rolled it two and a half times and went down seventy feet. Overcorrected. The car is not fine. You may be wondering about the ticket he received. Well, he did not get one as he has a clean driving record. Why? Because they never give him tickets when they pull him over for speeding. The one time they did, he got it erased in court.

  15. Rough day in the life of farming son yesterday. The bankout wagon broke in the morning, one of the drivers put a semi in the ditch later, and then the boss’s little boy got bitten by a rattlesnake. He was playing with his brothers, went in the house, put some bandaids on it and went out to play. His folks had other ideas. He should be home from the hospital this afternoon.

  16. Newspapers are the front line of defense against corrupt government (and contrary to what Chas said, print journalists are also heavily featured on cable news — hope they get paid for doing that, considering the state of the industry right now 😦

  19. Good afternoon. My brother came by at about 7:15 to trim my hedges out front. Problem was, he’d only sent a text which I had not gotten. Art was getting out of the tub and did not answer the door, and I was still asleep with the noisy fan roaring so I heard nothing. Brother came back after getting breakfast at Bojangles. He was not happy with me for not checking my text message since it is currently my only communication device. I reminded he could have called on Art’s phone. Well, all is well that ends well. The front yard looks better now. I just hope he can soon find employment so the little things won’t bug him so much. He won’t let me pay him for his help.

  20. Y’all have a lot more excitement going on in those other areas of our nation. Here it is too muggy for excitement. The only thrill around here was created by my being out in the rain while helping my brother so my hair now has the electrified frizzies.

    I just spent 2+ hours at the vet, getting Cowboy and Tess checked out for their annual vaccines, blood work and once-overs. Cowboy needs to go back for a teeth cleaning, so I set that up for the 26th.

    Coming back up the front steps when we got home there were several baby lizards scurrying about & some butterflies fluttering in the bushes. Annie was inside. 🙂

    We received the news this morning at 3:00 AM that Dad had passed away and gone to be with our dear Lord.
    We are thankful for his life and his great influence on ours.
    We are also thankful that he passed easily and peacefully.

  25. Yes, local journalism is vital. Whenever I read our local paper, I’m reminded of how communication is the glue that holds a community together. Yet, on the other hand, subscriptions cost money which many of us, myself and my parents included, do not have to spend (not to mention how impossible it is to pay for things on the internet if one does not have a credit card).

    Donna, sadly, these days even being killed by a wild animal isn’t enough to make the radical animal activists say that we have a problem. They’ll just say that it is nature’s way.

  27. Guy wanted to know something about a “rebate” on power for a large warehouse he is showing. The company needs this information in doing their business plan to locate a department here. He asked me to call the Power Company to get the information. I told him I would call my aunt. He sarcastically asked if she owned the power company. Nope, but she has worked for them for about 40 years. Then he asked if she was in a position to know that information. Well, I would suppose she would. When we have a power outage or a big storm roll through she stay in the headquarters and makes the decision if everything is a go to flip the switch back on.
    Instead of spending hours on the phone tracking down the information I sent her an email. she called me in about 15 minutes, a couple of clicks of her computer she pulled up the property and I have the information Guy needs. He can be so condescending.

  30. New names: Henceforth, 1st Daughter is Nightingale. (Get it? Like Florence.) 2nd Daughter is now Chickadee. (She is “my little Chickadee”, as W.C. Fields might say.) L will just be Hubby. Little Guy will remain Little Guy. R will be Mr X.

    I can’t figure out how to change my name in my Gravatar account, or even if I can change my name. If I can’t, I’ll just stay me.

  33. Whew, working in the spare room today, lots of stuff to give away, some stuff to throw away, some stuff to take to the electronic waste collection site Saturday morning. 🙂

    Getting set up with someone to check my foundation — I think it’s fine (so does my cousin & others I’ve asked) but cracks in the driveway have caused outside cracks in the stucco. I need to find out if all it needs is filling or if there’s something that should be done that’s more extensive (let’s hope not). No cracks inside the house or misfitting doors or other usual signs it’s moving or slipping.

    My cousin thinks that while the driveway (my house is built on a hill) is cracking/moving/settling (it has been for a while), that the house is staying still. The strain of the driveway, he thinks, is what’s caused the cracks in the house exterior nearby. He said he wouldn’t necessarily feel like it would have to be checked, but my real estate pal is full of worst-case scenario horror tales and likes to scare me, I think. So better to check it I suppose and this person is a community news source of mine (her husband is very politically active in the local GOP circles — and yes, it’s a small circle) so we know each other and, thus, I trust her. I hated the idea of having some anonymous structural engineer coming in and telingl me heaven knows what that needs to be done at some outrageous cost. I have trust issues.

    Another one of those things I decided I probably should do before I move forward on anything else, like painting.

    I do kind of like the idea of a little more privacy. But I also remember at the time I joined WMB, there was a big stress on being transparent and using your real names when commenting (big problems at the time, i think with trolls and nasty ‘anonymous’ comments)

  36. Nightingale received notice that Mr X has petitioned to have the protective order modified so that he can have contact with Little Guy.

    In the list of reasons he gave (some of which don’t even concern this matter), he said that the charges were false & unsubstantiated, that he is choosing to go to trial & will represent himself, & that the child was not in any danger, among other “reasons” for modifying the protective order.

    Oh! He also wrote that he is an asset to the community, spending most of his free time volunteering at a soup kitchen & with youth sports. As Nightingale says, “Since when?!”

    It does not surprise me that he chose to go to trial & will represent himself. After all, he is a narcissist. (That reminds me of a saying lawyers have – “A lawyer who represents himself has a fool for a client”.)

    The part about the charges being unsubstantiated, with no material witnesses, concerns me. He planned it that way, by parking elsewhere, & going up the side stairs, which we don’t even use, to avoid Hubby & me knowing he was here. But there was a material witness – Little Guy. And yet, I hope they can get a conviction without him having to testify. (I don’t know if my having heard Nightingale scream would make me any kind of witness.)

  38. My prayer is that Mr X will be convicted, even if it is for something a bit lesser than the original charges, & that he will do some jail time. My motive in this is not vengeance, but for justice, & that maybe he will learn something.

    He had recently been charged with hit & run, but the case was dismissed. He was crowing about that on Facebook. (As I’ve said, he has recently been posting in the Public mode, so even though we are not FB friends, I can read his posts.) He has gotten away with so much. He’s had a couple DUIs, but one was in Connecticut & one was in Massachusetts, so they were both counted as first offenses.

    My concern is that if he gets off on these charges, he will think he is invincible, & will be more harassing towards Nightingale, & maybe more dangerous. (Although I posted this here instead of on the prayer thread, please pray with me on this. Thank you.)

  48. I think the key is remembering the email you used when you set up the gravatar, Chas. Did you have an older email you may have been using back then? You can try signing into the site with that (and hoping you remember your password — if not, they may be able to email it to you).

  52. When I change my name it is going to be to Grumpy Old Woman. Today Junior and I decided to get lunch from Panera Bread. He said he would pick it up if I called it in. You can’t call in an order you have to go on line. I told him and he volunteered to order it online since he was at his computer. Finally he said “I give up. I’ll just go get it”. I told him to make sure they new they frustrated a 24 year old because if I had complained I would have been a grumpy old woman.
    On the positive side lunch was good. Turkey and Avocado BL(no T) and Fiji Chicken Salad from the Pick 2 menu.

  55. I’m too afraid of green as the overall color — and my cousins are both fans of the more natural shades. So while I’m BORED with beige, I do think there are shades out there that are promising — more yellow-based, warmer, deeper, richer. Not that washed-out, thin ‘sand’ and almost colorless shade I see so much of around here.

  57. I was the Grumpy Old Woman a couple of hours ago (or felt like it, anyway, but didn’t snap at anyone, though I came awfully close, and it wouldn’t have been good, considering the recent medical stresses in our household — they don’t need a grouchy mom on top of everything else).

    Anyway, having my piano student come tonight (she’s usually on Wednesday, but rescheduled for this week) helped cure me of the snappy bug. This was her second lesson since we’ve gone from the 45- to the 75-minute lessons, and I just love this time frame. We can go into a lot more depth with her music, and it’s wonderful. The time goes quickly, and there’s no shortage of things to do, but I don’t feel like I’m rushing to get everything in. We average about 10 minutes in each of the seven books, and do some rhythm exercises for 5 minutes in the middle, standing up for a little variety. A lot of those things used to be only 5 minutes rather than 10, or, if I’d go longer than that (as I often did), then some things we wouldn’t get to at all some weeks.

    So nice to have this extra time with her. We cover a lot of ground, and she’s got great stamina for the extra work. A real delight to work with.

  58. Feeling mad enough to spit!! I mentioned I wanted to discuss something at the staff meeting for just 5 minutes and was told there was no time. If we can’t even have 5 minutes to discuss something as a staff then what am I doing here. Planning on skipping the meeting as I am too upset to go anyway. I am at home now.
