  8. The roof replacement project begins today. Yay and boo. Will feel good to finally get this done but I’m also worried, hoping no unexpected problems arise and that the animals can deal with all of the commotion as I’ll be at work today. They’ll be nervous wrecks, probably.

    And this will go on all week, more or less, maybe longer as I’m hoping he can do a couple other things (replacing some of the front porch frame posts + (maybe-maybe) replacing my back patio frame. If not, I’ll be looking for someone else to do that — for a good price, hopefully.

  11. Donna, have you ever been in a house or next door to a house that was being roofed?
    Because of the heat, roofers generally start at 6am or perhaps 2am….it all depends on how tired you are.
    That incessant, measured tap, tap, tapping of the nail gun…. yes, you are better off going to work.

  12. They’ve started, got here before 7 (official arrival time was to be 8, but I expected them before that because they’re driving from the inland area, so a long commute for them just to get here).

    Tromp, tromp, tromp above, dogs are beside themselves (and under my feet), the cat has vanished in light of Armageddon having arrived at last. Today they’re ripping off the old roof.

  13. I have what’s called a ‘rolled’ (flat, Mediterranean) roof that already had several layers built-up on it. I need to just make sure they know to keep the back gate closed as I’d like to open the doggie door for the dogs (will lock the cat inside the other part of the house). They’ll be less stressed outside, I think.

    I can probably arrange to work from home part of the day, my morning assignment is here in town at the waterfront and will be an off-and-on thing probably, to some extent.

  14. We have a small joke going for our daughter who is about to marry. For background, when the girls were growing up, their parents often told them stories about Uncle Fred. The girls never got to meet Uncle Fred, but they heard a lot about him. One day they were even sitting in their booster seats at the table when Uncle Fred came to the door and one of their parents went and talked with him, but that’s the closest the girls came to meeting him. One day the older daughter said she hadn’t heard anything about Uncle Fred lately, and her mother said, “Oh, that’s because he’s in prison now. We don’t talk about him anymore.” Later, the daughter insisted on knowing was Uncle Fred real, and her mother started to go on with the tale, and she asked no, she’s asking for real, is he a real person?

    Well, my husband and I got hold of an RSVP card, marked that Fred A____________ regrets that he can’t come, and Friday we drove to the town where the family lives. I went into the post office and asked that it be hand-stamped so that the post mark is clear. It’s sitting on the table now, a little worse for wear from going through the mail, waiting for our daughter to come home and get her mail. 🙂 Oh yeah, and Friday was the last day guests were supposed to RSVP, so I guess Uncle Fred is a procrastinator.

    When I saw the top photo on this little phone I thought there must be a snake in there somewhere. Then I saw Chipper. My mother used to tell us to stay away from places that look “snakey.” I was reminded about that warning,at first sight of the header.

  16. Yep, thought I would go mad when they reroofed out house in May? June? Cat hid away and I wanted to as well. Kim is right about the tapping and when it’s overhead and there’s no where to roam . . . We better put Tess, Cowboy and Annie and Donna on the prayer list.

    I went to the grocer to get a few things we need.
    $52.27!
    I only had $40 and change on me. I had to use credit.
    I was amazed at how fast that register was going up.

Clock man wasn’t there yet, but just got a call that he’s arrived — trying to stick close to home today, though, roofer already told (and showed) me they’d found lots of termite damage and signs in plywood so that also needs to be replaced, along with insulation which was pretty shot and mostly wet, he said. But inside boards, he said, look to be in good shape, so that’s good. A little bit of a language barrier to muddle through, but …

  24. The other rule to shopping Chas is that you can put your items on the belt to be rung up and you will be under $50 UNTIL the last 4 items and then suddenly you are at $75 or $100. I don’t know why it works that way, but it does/

  27. So, a week ago, second sibling-in-law made an inspection of our beehive. We found that the bees had filled every comb (I was taking pictures of the combs as he pulled them out of the box), so he was going to make a new, bigger, hive as the hive is just a starter. Then, last week, my father noticed the bees kept bearding outside the hive. We thought they were just trying to survive the heat. This Sunday afternoon, Second’s family came to visit, and some friends of theirs who live nearby came over to see Tiny Niece. Well, the men went out to look at the bees, and they found that they had swarmed, halfway up one of our big white pines. The friend, who has training in forestry, bravely climbed the tree, and shook the swarm off into a makeshift receptacle – bees that are swarming are concentrating on survival and less likely to sting. So, they had to improvise a temporary hive out of a box, and now Second in-law and my father are working like mad, in their few spare moments, to make another hive.

  31. Ok my compute savvy friends. I am used to being able to track or red line changes in a Word document. Suddenly Microsoft Word has quit doing this on my computer. I have Googled how to fix it and am not able to. Do any of you have any great ideas for me?

  32. Kim, Microsoft Word will get temperamental if it is open too long. It is as if it gets tired and loses its ability to concentrate. So, sometimes if it is doing weird things I just close it, and then reopen it again – usually the problem disappears. The other thing you can do is go to the Microsoft Word button in the top left of the window – the one where you go to open a new file or ‘Save As’. At the bottom of that menu, there is a little icon with the label ‘Word Options’. If you click on it, a window will open up. In the left side menu, click ‘Proofing’. When the Proofing options show up in the right pane, go down the list and make sure the box next to ‘Check spelling as you type’ is checked.

  34. How can you tell which version of Word you are using?

    🙂 Youngest granddaughter came over, and while here, she put a dictionary APP on my iPhone.
    It says: Bisque: noun, 1. a thick cream soup made with shellfish or game.

    Makes sense since that was the section of the store I was in.

  36. Kim, you may be able to find a helpful guide book for your version of Microsoft in your local library. I checked out one to help with something I need to learn to do.

  37. To get the version of most Windows applications you can open the Help menu at the top and click “About…”. That will tell you the version number.

    Depending on the application it might also tell you the version number on a splash screen that displays while the application is opening.

    In recent versions of Word you can go to the File menu and click Account, and the version number will be displayed somewhere under the heading “Product Information”.

  38. Kim, if you’re using Office 365 like I am, go to the Review menu and click Track Changes. If you’re using a different version of Word, let me know which and I can probably find out for you.

  39. Where I come from, a thick creamy soup with shellfish is a chowder. Now I’m wondering if there is a difference. 😦 I can’t eat seafood chowder anymore – shellfish now makes my mouth tingle and my throat itchy, signs of a developing allergy.

    Chas, the version of Word is usually found in the title on the program icon. My current icon says Microsoft Office Word 2007, and a very good year that was for computer programming.

I spent some hours over at my friend’s hoping to get a glimpse of the three cats I am caring for (I think the three produce more litter box takeaways in one day than Miss Bosley does In a week). Only one cat showed up to slink out from hiding in one place to go hide somewhere else. I decided I better leave so they could get to the litter box if they needed to. Being rescue from the wild cats, they are not like Miss Bosley who thinks all people are her good friends and servants. I have not been around cats who are afraid of me before. I sang to them, talked to them, talked to my friend with the speaker phone on so they could hear her, and nothing worked until I began opening a little Toastee pack of peanut butter crackers. The sound of rattling cellophane was irresistible to Rocket who did not live up to his name as he almost slithered like a snake to avoid me. I hope the food I left for them disappears.

  41. Someone in our town posted that they saw a cat & a coyote nose-to-nose on a sidewalk — person (who was driving and had stopped or just turned the corner,I believe) honked & the coyote took off. Whew. Too close a call. f a call.

    Roofers left around 2 and will be back bright and early tomorrow to carry on. Lots of banging and noise, so it’s nice to have it quiet for a change. The animals certainly appreciate it, they’re all in the bedroom together enjoying a group nap this afternoon, a cool breeze coming through the window …

    My clock tower man didn’t finish his job today so my story will be held, but it’s mostly written at this point. Loved being able to work from home, though — tomorrow I won’t be so lucky. Have to turn the Jeep in for service in the morning & get a loaner for the day. It’s a complicated week.

  42. Janice – Our cat Angel, who turns eight today (well, we assigned this date as her approximate birthday), was a crazy little kitten, dashing around the house, playing with anybody who would play with her.

    But sometime around the time she turned one, she started showing signs of being afraid of lots of things. Now she mostly stays hidden during the day, but she comes out at night, when Heidi is sleeping on the bed with us & the rest of the house is quiet, too. We can often go a day or more without even seeing her.

    It makes me sad, because she is a sweet, affectionate kitty.

  43. I’m whining about my week, Donna.

    After a long week last week, including babysitting all weekend, not to mention what happened Wednesday night, I was glad to see 1st Dtr only had two days of work written on the calendar, although I realized there would also be an evening she’d have to work at Claire’s.

    This afternoon, as she came to write the Claire’s hours on the calendar, she was surprised to find that her Friday work hours had not been written down. 😦

    I really do not like this not knowing what a week’s schedule will be until just before, or even after, the week begins. I can deal with things better if I am mentally prepared.

  44. My weeks are pretty predictable as a rule. But the house stuff makes me kind of stressed (although it’s feeling pretty good to get these things done at long last). I’m still hoping to be able to afford A/C … And I will be painting the house at some point at the end of it all, trying to decide on color schemes.

    But first, the roof, porch & patio structures so it all doesn’t fall down around me.

  45. I was using Windows 10 but I will be using Windows 365 soon.

    I have known for about a year that a new computer was in my future. My current one was purchased June of 2010, It is a laptop and have been all over the East Coast, to Texas and back and forth to the beach. That isn’t really good for them. About two months ago I backed everything up to an external hard drive. This morning it took me 15 minutes to save a PDF to a file and then I had the Word difficulty. Guy is in the Bahamas for the next week and won’t be needing things immediately. If I was going to purchase a new computer and learn it now was the time. I just finished setting up the new Samsung Windows 10 computer. I can’t remember my WordPress password. I am having to change passwords and log in to programs I use all the time. I also discovered I don’t have the matching port to attached my second monitor but I have all week to figure everything out.
    I told guy this morning that I had his credit card, his SS#, and his mother’s maiden name and to have fun on vacation because ….

  46. Donna, the roofers left at 2 because that is when happy hour starts at most bars—but then I might be cynical.

    Karen, In retail they don’t give you your hours ahead of time. They look at what is going on in the mall or if it is close to an event and schedule according. BG gets her schedule on Saturday for the next week.

  47. Haha, maybe. But they do have a long drive back to their home turf (and are probably trying to miss some of the rush hour traffic) and have to turn around and come back tomorrow morning before dawn. That’s hard work they do.

  48. Kim – Yeah, we’ve been dealing with this for a couple years or more now. In addition to that, her days working & training at the nursing home have varied. And then there’s that per diem job that will start up again next week. (There was some glitch in their records that kept them from having 1st Dtr back the last couple weeks, but I guess it’s been straightened out.)

    1st Dtr is close to quitting Claire’s but she knows that they are awfully short-handed right now. Three girls up & quit within a short period of time, not even bothering to give notice. The store already runs with as few employees as possible, so losing those ladies has been a burden on the remaining few. 1st Dtr is only working there one day a week to help out for a while.

    Meanwhile, in her training at the nursing home, she is at the point where she has done all the work of her training nurse for a few days. She still doesn’t feel as confident in it as she’d like, but it shows her competence that she could do all the work on her own, & in the allotted time. 🙂

  50. Hi everyone. Everyone’s sleeping here. I had a migraine earlier and went to bed from 8:30 til 11:00…now I can’t sleep (but migraine is better–hooray!).
    Lindsey’s car has been in the shop for a week–it’s finally supposed to be ready tomorrow –so I’ve seen much more of her than usual, which has been nice.
    My mom called her today and left her a very sweet voicemail. Lindsey returned the call and they had a nice chat for about fifteen minutes. I could tell the call meant a lot to her. Lindsey’s always been one of my mom’s favorite grandchildren….
    Lindsey seems overwhelmed about college. She’d like to go out of state, but we don’t know if we can afford that–especially with the downfall in oil and gas these last couple of years.
