  3. So, I had four nieces and four nephews yesterday. The tie was broken early this morning, in favour of the nephews. Now Little Niece and Baby Niece have a little brother. It happened so quickly that I wasn’t able to be there, but mother and baby are both well.

  7. I haven’t been here much, but I went to yesterday’s thread. Interesting discussion on whom to blame for sin. Cheryl stated that the NT blames Adam. I agree. Paul says, “For as in Adam all die.” Not Eve.

    Karen, you asked if the idea that some of the law was case law could call into question its inspiration. Not at all. Both Old and New Testament make it quite clear that Moses judged and wrote under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. After all, he also wrote Genesis – though it is probable he had other written sources to draw his facts from. In understanding the case law portion of the OT, however, we can understand what we are intended to learn from it.

    The example of Proverbs will illustrate this. Some people use the Proverbs as if they were laws, quoting things like the Proverb (23:13-14) on corporal discipline as if every child must be spanked because God has ordered it so. But Proverbs is wisdom literature, a selection of sayings which each illustrate a wider concept. So the Proverb on spanking a child isn’t a mandate for corporal discipline, but rather a wise observation that a child will benefit from being disciplined, even though the parent finds the discipline hard to carry out – as one of my siblings remarked, if you like disciplining your child, you probably shouldn’t be doing it.

    The case laws of the law also need to be viewed in a proper light to understand how to apply them. The infamous program run by Gothard used to teach, using the case law of the rape of a betrothed woman in Deuteronomy 22:25-27, that if a woman did not cry out as she was being sexually assaulted, then she was consenting to the act. They failed, or refused, to recognize that the Deuteronomy passage was case law used to determine those cases where it is a matter of ‘he said, she said’; it is not presenting an overarching principle that a woman who does not cry out is giving her consent.

  14. Good morning. I seem to have a touch of a cold and stomach bug or maybe just allergies. I am not feeling so great. A tree guy is suppose to give me estimates after a bit.

    Congratulations to Auntie R! Summer is a good time for new babies.

    Those are tiger lilies blooming. I remember going to my grandmother’s in AL as a girl and seeing tiger lilies for the first time. I believe we transplanted the ones in our yard from Art’s parents home.

    I tried the Japanese method of decluttering where you hold every object that you own and if it does not bring you joy, you throw it away. So far I have thrown out all of the vegetables, my bra, the electric bill, the scale, a mirror, and my treadmill.

  17. Elvera should try that. She saves everything. When cleaning out to move about a month ago, I came across a big stack of offering envelopes from Boulevard Baptist Church. The one we attended in Virginia.
    She keeps useless things around all the time.
    She still has me.

    Saw a post from one of our young dads at church, one of our elders, who said he’d just gotten the “most Mormon” haircut he’s ever had — and he’s had a few.

    Peter, does that mean you’ll start moving this weekend?

    The 2nd roofer is supposed to come by for an estimate this morning before I leave for work. Tonight there will be big fireworks over the harbor so my dogs will be going through their usual angst. But it’s Friday at last and I’m SO looking forward to sleeping in tomorrow.

  21. The hair cut worked well. I got there ahead of time, he took me ahead of time and finished ahead of time.
    Not only was that my first haircut by appointment, it was the first time Elvera has seen me get a hair cut.

    😦 But he didn’t make me look good.

  23. I will have major trimming and cutting going on next week. Miss Bosley will lose that little tree you see in the window in the photo. She will be frustrated to see her viewing world changed so much. Poor girl, the humans have too much control over her empire.

I’m hoping for an ‘easy’ day today, finishing up a story I started yesterday (but I still need to interview the main source, a navy spokesman, on it this morning); put in a few weekend photo assignments; and I may get a chance to further pick the brain of the coyote biologist I interviewed last month.

    Still waiting for the roofer …

  25. Had I mentioned that R had found a job in Maryland? He put in for a transfer, which was approved, & has recently moved back to our area. Of course, he won’t be helping much with any of this extra babysitting we’re doing (two 12-hour days next week within the six-in-a-row we’ll have), because he works full-time & is tired after work. :-/

  29. Roofer was very impressive and professional, I’m confident he’d do an excellent and thorough job — written estimate to come maybe over the weekend. But I suspect he’ll be quite a bit more expensive than the other guy. …

    The biologist I spoke with said these kinds of citizen science approaches can only go so far — but they are cheap.

    Her research compares the stomach contents to the scat (to see how well it matches for future dependability). Most of the coyotes she has are road kill specimines that have been killed by cars or otherwise euthanized — she’s got several freezers-full (80?) of dead coyotes, spanning a couple of SoCal counties now, but needs more to expand the sample size.

  45. The Hendersonville Lions Club gave up clean up on Hwy 64 because of the danger.
    I’ll mention the “Poop Patrol” to them.
    Only we don’t have coyotes in Hendersonvlile.
    Too bad about that..
